HCS Tennis Team Still 6-0; Rain
Delays Friday's Third Singles Match
The HCS varsity tennis team came out of Friday's home match
against Westmoreland with its undefeated record in place --
even though they did not win the match.
Rob Poznar's Emerald Knights remained 6-0 because their
Center State Conference Division II home match was not
finished due to slippery conditions. Hamilton, 3-0 in the CSC
II, won the first two singles matches behind Gennady Julien
(6-0, 6-1) and Josh Valencia (6-0, 6-0). Julien, at 7-0, has not
lost a set all season.
But Westmoreland swept the two doubles matches, making
the match 2-2 and leaving the third singles match to decide the
outcome.
Westmoreland's Tyler Witter handed Hamilton's Ryan Burdick
his first set loss of the season, winning the initial set, 6-4. But
Burdick bounced back to win the second set, 6-3. The match
was then suspended because a light rain was making the courts
too slippery.
That third singles contest will be completed on May 19 in
Westmoreland before the two teams play their second league
meeting of the season.
Hamilton hosts Morrisville-Eaton Monday.
The Emerald Knights won twice earlier in the week. They
defeated Waterville 5-0 and won 3-2 at Poland on Thursday.
Julien and Josh Valencia each won, 6-0, 6-0, while Ryan Burdick
won by forfeit. In doubles, the teams of Richard Ammerman
and John Valencia (6-2, 6-2) and David Schutt and Ben
Werner (6-1, 6-0) also won.
At CSC Division I opponent Poland, the Knights won another
tight match, their third 3-2 triumph of the season. Julien (6-0,
6-0) and Burdick (6-1, 6-0) remained undefeated on the
season, but the match was not sewn up until Ammerman and
John Valencia pulled out a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory in first doubles.
