Emerald Knights Fourth in Tournament;
Face Mt. Markham at Home Today
The Hamilton Central varsity tennis team finished fourth in a field of
12 teams at this past weekend's Center State Conference
tournament at Utica's Mott Tennis Courts.

The tournament combined teams from the CSC's Division I and II
for the  first time in recent memory.  Sauquoit won the tournament
with 33 points, followed by Westmoreland with 24, Cooperstown
with 22 and Hamilton with 19.

The Emerald Knights were led by junior Gennady Julien, who won
matches  over Poland's Bryan Sheppard, 10-4, and Herkimer's Rob
Murphy, 6-1,  6-3, to advance to the finals of the first singles flight.
There he  battled Sauquoit's Nick Tuttle before falling 6-3, 6-4.  The
match marked Julien's first loss in 12 matches this season, and the
first sets Julien has dropped.

In other singles play, Josh Valencia defeated Canastota's David
Hibbard, 10-3, before falling to Evan Carney of Mount Markham,
6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals at second singles.  Ryan Burdick also
reached the semis at third singles, defeating Henry Bataille of
Morrisville-Eaton, 10-2, before dropping a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 marathon to
eventual third singles champ Tyler Witter of Westmoreland in the
semifinals.

In first doubles, Richard Ammerman and John Valencia won, 10-4,
over Poland in the first round before bowing out in the
quarterfinals, 10-6, to Cooperstown, while the second doubles team
of Ben Werner and David Schutt fell in the first round, 10-2, to
Canastota.

The Knights, 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the CSC II, return to play Monday
with a home CSC II match against Mount Markham.
