Fisher Steps Up for Lady Knights;
Pitches Hamilton to Big Victory
The Lady Emerald Knights lost to Oriskany twice during the 2007
regular season. They lost to Oriskany in the finals of the
sectionals last year. And, they lost 12-9 at Oriskany just last
month.
So, when the Lady Emerald Knights were to face the 12-1squad
Monday without the considerable services of pitcher Samantha
Martin, it seemed like it might be a long seven innings. Martin,
who until Monday had pitched every inning of every game this
year, was sidelined with a wrist injury.
Then, up stepped Calyn Fisher, Hamilton's starting third baseman.
She filled in for Martin on the mound and helped lead the lady
Emerald Knights to a 9-8 win at home Monday.
Fisher struck out two, surrendered nine walks -- two intentional
ones -- and got superb defensive back up from the rest of the
squad.
"She handled herself in an outstanding way," said Hamilton Coach
Bill Dowsland. "I couldn't be more pleased with her, and I'm
extremely proud of the entire team."
Hamilton was down 7-1 going into the bottom of the fourth.
Inspiration seemed to stroke and the Lady Emerald Knights
jumped on the ball, batting through the entire lineup.
In the fourth inning alone, Liz Unger had a single and a double,
Nicole Beers rapped out a triple and Sara Whyatt drilled a home
run with a runner on base.
Hamilton gave up one more run but then shut down Oriskany
for the win.
On the day, Unger ended up going three for four; Fisher helped
her own cause with two hits in the trips to the plate, Beers was
three for four and Whyatt was two for four.
Beating a league-leading, 12-1 state ranked team is nice any time
it happens. But it is even sweeter as the regular season winds
down and the sectional seating meeting is just around the corner.
Hamilton is at Richfield Springs Wednesday and home against
Otselic Valley Friday.
