Lady Knights Bounce Back; Bury Sidney 6-1

Coming back from a season opening loss is not easy, especially for a young team. Coming back from a resounding loss is even more difficult.

But the HCS Lady Emerald Knights girls soccer team Saturday played as if their 4-0 loss to Sherburne-Earlville Friday never happened. They overpowered Sidney 6-1, playing hard-nosed defense and looking as though they could score on every push into Sidney's end. And, they did much of this with some young players on the pitch.

"The fact that they bounced back so well was important," said Coach Harry Jarcho. "A lot of our younger girls came through and the defense was especially solid."

Stephanie Salmon and Lauren Weeks may have bounced highest for HCS. Between them they score five goals: Salmon had a hat trick and Weeks scored once. Katherine Keever had the Lady Knights' other goal.

Weeks opened the scoring at 31:15 in the first half on an assist from Clara Jones.

Salmon tallied her first of three at 21:52 with the help of the other Weeks on the team, Katie. Salmon's second cam at 11:27 , again with Katie Week's lending a hand.

That gave Hamilton a comfortable 3-0 lead at the intermission.

Salmon resumed her big scoring day at 28:56 of the second half. This time freshman Hayleigh Hanson made the feed.

Bethany Karl scored Sidney's only goal unassisted at the 22:50 mark.

Lauren Weeks recorded her second goal of the afternoon, assisted by Carrie vonMuench at the 18:07 mark.

And, Katherine Keever scored the final goal of the contest on an assist from Clara Jones with 16:13 remaining on the clock.

Salmon and Weeks were both named to the all-tournament team.

Hamilton goalkeeper Kelby Watkins made one save of two shots on goal. Sidney goalkeeper Alexia Sundal had 18 saves of 24 shots on goal.

Hamilton's record is now 1-1 and overall, 0-1 in league as they play at Canastota Wednesday and play in the Optimists' Tournament at home on the weekend.
