HCS Opens School Year Tuesday

The HCS Class of 2011 begins its trek toward graduation on Tuesday.

A new school year gets started, and as it does students and parents will see a few new things and new faces. When they arrive at 47 W. Kendrick students will find:

a new windmill spinning away, generating both eectricity and learning opportunities;
a refurbished cafeteria;
a new Hall of Honor display;

Kindergarten and Pre-K Orientation will be held Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Elementary Principal Kevin Ellis said children will have the opportunity to meet their teachers, the nurse and the principal. They will also see their classrooms and learn about bus safety. Parents will be given an overview of school services and general routines. That day, students that ride a bus will be picked up and brought to school on a separate bus run. Parents are encouraged to ride to and from orientation on the bus, with their child.

One of the biggest changes will mean that elementary school students will have a six-day schedule. That does not mean they will be in classes an extra day. It means their classes will rotate every six days instead of five. Ellis explains:

"Students will now attend specials on a "six day" cycle. The first day of school will be "Day 1," the second day will be a "Day 2" and so on. This will continue until "Day 6" and then it will start over. Your child's teacher will be providing you with a schedule for each month detailing the special for each day. The district website will also be a resource for determining which day it is."

HCS has added several new professionals to the staff while students were on vacation.

Johanna Bossard, is the new agriculture teacher. She has a master’s degree from SUNY Oswego and an undergraduate degree from Morrisville State. She has experience with FFA, and she has a diverse background in agriculture, ranging from welding to horticulture.
Michael Day, is the new French teacher. He joins HCS after teaching at Whitesboro. He has studied in Paris, has a master’s degree from SUNY Buffalo, and an undergraduate degree from SUNY Binghamton.
Barbara Orth, is a new parttime science teacher. She has taught science in Virginia for many years. She has a master’s from Virginia Commonwealth University and an undergraduate degree from Longwood University.
Brandi Bostic will have a dual role as guidance counselor for grades 7-8 and Secondary Response to Intervention Coordinator. She has a master’s degree from Sage College, and an undergraduate degree from SUNY Cortland.
Jennifer Bailey is the new occupational therapist.
