HCS Field Hockey: Look for Aggressive Offense, Team Play

HCS field hockey continues to grow and improve.

The next step in that maturation process comes Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. On that day, the Lady Emerald Knights host Sherburne-Earlville, opening the 2010 season and starting Coach Karrie King's third year at the helm.

King is looking for big things from a strong corps of seniors, and several very skilled underclasspersons. She will be the first of three HCS coaches to field only half of the notable Whyatt sisters act this year. Jenna graduated in June, but Sara is back as a senior with a repaired shoulder.

Coach King is looking for aggressive play on offense and an overall team effort on both ends of the field.

Last Season

Overall record from last season 4-8-4 Highlights:

  • Beating New York Mills 2-1
  • Beating Sherburne 3-0 and 1-0
  • Going undefeated for our first four games of the season

Goals & How to Reach Them

  • Have more shots on goal,
  • Score more on corners,
  • And to make sectional play this season.

We will need to work very hard to reach these goals. We will be coming up with different plays on corners to make them more effective. We will also need to work on our play at the top of the circle to get more shots on goal.

Graduated Two Seniors:

  • Jenna Whyatt - Her stick skills and speed will be missed. She was able to take the ball down the field faster than anyone.
  • Hillary Hanson - Her leadership and positive attitude will be missed. She was always encouraging and offered great advice to her team.

This Year's Strengths:

I think this season we have a lot of seniors who are looking to make their last year here at HCS a great one. They will bring experience, leadership and they have a great sense of tenacity to do well this season. We also have very promising younger players who are willing to learn and bring a lot of speed to the team.

The Team's Five Key Players:

  • Sara Whyatt-  A key part of the midfield, she has great drives, passing, ball control and is able to dribble the ball through the field extremely well.
  • Jenna Schell - A key forward to getting the ball up the field. She passes well and is very unselfish in the circle. She isn't afraid to take a shot though!
  • Jessica Welsh - Brings speed and youth to the forward line. She has the ability to get low and take great shots in the circle.
  • Nicolle Holcomb - Great defensive player. She is smart with her positioning on the field and teammates can always count on her to take the ball from the opponent and get it up the field. Great ball tackling skills.
  • Megan Van Auken - Goalie. She takes a great amount of pride in her position and is able to communicate well with the defense. She makes great saves under pressure.

Keys to Success this Season:

  • They must work together.
  • Passing is a must for successful ball movement on the field. With that, they must communicate effectively. Clear communication cuts down on errors and makes it easier to move the ball anywhere on the field and put it in the cage!
  • Lastly, I want my team to stay positive and trust their teammates. These girls must have confidence in their own skills and each other's abilities. It is not a team if one player thinks they have to do everything instead of passing to a teammate.

The Competition:

Tough competition-Canastota, Morrisville-Eaton, New York Mills. These teams are always tough to beat. They have strong stick skills, speed and powerful drives. They also never give up or get too confident.
