Film Festival Becoming Summer Fixture

Now that the last whiff of popcorn has faded, it's clear that the recently-concluded Slater Brothers International Film Festival is, in the Hollywood vernacular, a hit.

Organizers say filmmakers and viewers alike praised the weekend's events, and they are optimistic about the future.

Todd Slater, who with his brothers Grant and Wade created the event:

"We couldn't be happier with the festival, and yes we are making it an annual event and hope the whole town really gets involved so the Slater Brother's Hamilton International Film Festival can grow even more."

It seems as though there is a growing appetite for film locally. Slater said organizers had to turn people away since they sold out screenings of some movies, and the hunger awareness walk to benefit the Hamilton Food Cupboard also doubled in size from last year. In addition, the filmmakers' panel discussion on Saturday packed the dining room of the Colgate Inn.

Chuck Fox, manager of the Hamilton Theater, echoed Slater:

"In all, we had more than 400 people in attendance for the events and lots of positive feedback. The highlights were the Friday evening screening of Race to Nowhere and the filmmakers discussion on Saturday, which attracted a surprising number of aspiring filmmakers from the area who were eager for a chance to talk with folks like Mark Durand from ESPN Films, film producer Alec Asten, plus Matt Malloy and Cas Donovan and Todd Slater to learn how to break into films. In that vein, the opportunity to showcase Kenny MacBain's film along side films from Harold Ramis and Joe Berlinger was a wonderful story."

And, it seems as though the village was hit as well.

Todd Slater:

"I have had every filmmaker write me and say how much they appreciated the weekend and loved Hamilton. Joe Berlinger said he wants to be involved next year in helping find great films and filmmakers for the festival. All in all it was a huge success."
