Colgate Women's Soccer Expected to Repeat as league Champs

The Colgate University women's soccer team has been picked to finish first in the 2010 Patriot League preseason poll voted by head coaches and sports information directors in the league.

The defending 2009 Patriot League champion was projected to finish above Navy and Bucknell after completing a successful 2009 season with an overall record of 11-7-3 and a league mark of 5-1-1.

The Raiders will begin their 2010 season this weekend on the road when they face No.17 Virginia on Sunday  at 2 p.m.

"The poll is a nice nod to the players for all of the work they did last year and shows how strong people think we are, " stated head coach Kathy Brawn who was recently named the 2009-2010 Howard Hartman Coach of the Year. "It is a lot harder to defend a title than to win one initially, but the good thing is that as a program we have had that experience before so that helps us a little bit."

Moving forward in the final week of preseason training, Brawn continues to prepare her team for the competitive road that lies ahead, reminding her players that every game on that road matters.

"I think its a matter of not resting on your laurels and making sure that we are well prepared for every game," Brawn said. "We respect our opponents and we don't take anyone lightly. The Patriot League is a really solid conference right now with a lot of big rivalries, and everyone is out there trying to do the same thing which is to win a Patriot League championship and make it to the NCAA tournament."
