Businesses Challenge School Taxes

Three local businesses think they pay too much in taxes to the Hamilton Central School District.

As a result, the Board of Education tonight created a certiorari reserve fund in case a court agrees with the businesses. The fund will contain between $40,000 and $50,000 in case C & S Wholesale Foods (owners of the defunct Grand Union store in Hamilton), Verizon and Dollar General successfully challenge their tax payments.

District Superintendent Diana Bowers said the district was required to create the reserve if a court rules in favor of the businesses and the district must refund some of the tax payments.

In other action, tonight, the board:

  • learned that New York will received some $686 million from the federal Race to the Top funding. HCS officials have no idea how much the district will receive;
  • heard that the district could receive some $234,000 in federal funds aimed at increasing teaching jobs. However, district officials have not received specific details about the money;
  • acknowledged receipt of a donation of more than $36,000 from the Emerald Foundation for a variety of projects.
  • approved changing the date of its December meeting from the 21st to the 20th.
