Colgate Student Jailed for
Shooting Threat Posted
On Controversial Website
George So, the 20-year-old Colgate student who
posted a comment suggesting shooting people on
campus, was arrested Tuesday morning and taken
to Madison County Jail on a charge of second
degree aggravated harassment. He was arraigned in
village court not long after his arrest and his bail
was set at $1,000 cash.

So's roommate in the College Street apartment,
Parker Paulin, also 20, was arrested for cocaine
possession.

And, at Tuesday night's Village Board meeting,
Mayor Sue McVaugh filled in some of the details of
the event, which caused a massive mobilization of
police, dire and ambulance corps personnel,
including the FBI.

On Monday night, So posted a brief comment on
juicycampus.com, a controversial website carrying
gossip from campuses around the country about
shooting people during his second class of the day
Tuesday. Another Colgate student saw the message
and reported it to campus safety.

With that, members of the village and state police,
Colgate Campus Security, the Madison County
Sheriff's Department, FBI, Hamilton Volunteer Fire
Department, members of village board, Community
Memorial Hospital and Colgate officials used the
SOMAC building on Lebanon Street as a staging
area. McVaugh said there were about 50 people
gathered there.

"The system really did work," said McVaugh, who
praised the police, Colgate and others who
"worked together just beautifully. It was absolute
total communications."

So's comment on juicycampus.com is still posted
and has drawn a firestorm of complaints,
presumably fro others at Colgate. Here is a
selection of comments, many of which are edited
for the harsh language directed at So.:

+ "If this gets the juicycampus Colgate site shut
down, I´ll be glad. That comment is not funny, it´s
terrifying and in really poor taste considering
everything that´s happened in recent times..you´re
a sicko, but at least the site will get shut down.

+ "I dont know what you were trying to
acomplish from this and if it really is just to have no
class that is the most selfish thing i have ever heard.
There have been shootings in numors schools in
the past years and this should not be thought as, as
funny. ... I hope they figure out who you are and
you get expelled."

+ "i (sic) agree that colgate (sic) as a community
should opt out of using this message board. our
(sic) school is small enough that all the juicy gossip
can be spread quickly without a forum where
parents, faculty, and future employers can search
our names. i (sic) found out about this post within
an hour just sitting in a dining hall.

+ "i´m (sic) not sure whose dumber, the guy who
got arrested, or the roommate getting busted for
coke posession (sic).

+ "no (sic) one likes a creepy psychopath or an
idiot who ends up looking like one while trying to
prove a point.

Juicy Campus Boasts
Anonymity & Inability
To Track Posters

The top of the Juicy Campus website claims,
"Posts are totally, 100 percent anonymous", and
urges visitors to "See our privacy and tracking
policy."

In that policy, Juicy Campus also gives advice on
how those posting messages to the site can
cloak their identities on the servers of their
campus or Internet service provider.

If you click to that policy, here is what you find:

Privacy & Tracking Policy

Your privacy is important to us. It’s a major
part of the value of this site, so we take it very
seriously. And that’s why we don’t even make
you register.

Here are a few things you should know:
  * It is not possible for anyone to use this
website to find out who you are or where you
are located
  * We do not collect any information directly
from you. You’ve never given us your name or
email address, and we don’t want it.
  * We do not track any information that can
be used by us to identify you.

Tips for the extra-cautious:
  * We do put a cookie on your computer.
This cookie holds a unique ID provided by the
JuicyCampus database and we use it to identify if
someone has voted and what their vote is. We
also use it tell whether you have already replied
to a post and which your reply was.
o You have the option of disabling
cookies on your browser, or deleting them
after your session if you so choose. The website
will still continue to function properly, and we’d
have no way of matching your votes or replies
to your computer.
  * Servers do, as a matter of course, keep
logs. This includes geographic information and ip
addresses.

o If you are particularly concerned
about hiding your ip address, there are
several services that offer free ip-cloaking.
Just do a quick search on Google and find
one you like…
o Note: All that an ip address means is
that you (or someone using your connection)
were on the site. The logs do not directly
associate ip addresses with specific posts.
